USED GEAR TIPS

Keep your gear alive, reduce your impact and get outside affordably! Used sporting goods and outdoor gear are just as good as, if not better, than new gear purchased at a store. Obsolete is not worthless and we encourage customers to re-purpose or trade-in gear before tossing them out. 2nd Base shop owner, Beau, has many years of experience and is here to help customers keep their gear alive and appreciate the value in recycling!

To detect a leak: Pour water over the nipple (the inflation hole) and look for bubbles. Spit also works.

SOCCER + BASKETBALLS

Size matters when buying a baseball glove, so expect to try on several. Put your last two fingers in the baby finger area, then flap the glove closed from baby finger to thumb, making sure your hand is exposed about an inch from the bottom of the glove.

BASEBALL GLOVES

Check for rust, frame damage, and corrosion. Worn parts can be changed. Spend the $40 to get a safety tune-up to ensure smooth shifting and mechanical errors.

BICYCLES

Vintage Baseball Ball

Check the bindings for loose threads and damage from force.

BASEBALLS

Vintage Helmet and American Football Bal

Be cautious of helmets that have damage. Scuffs and grass stains can be cleaned off.

FOOTBALL GEAR

First, find the best fit for your height. Next, look for blemishes, rust, or damage to the shaft. Grips can be easily replaced.

GOLF

Make sure there is not damage to the board. Check the buckles or install a new set.

Old skis and snowboards are often recycled into benches or tables. Ski poles can be turned into hiking poles or polo mallets.

SKIS

Rock climbing rope can be re-purposed for boating or general garage use. It is not recommended to climb on a heavily used rope.

ROCK CLIMBING GEAR

Look for wear-and-tear in the sleeve and neck area. Stains from sweat, dirt, and grass may be possible to remove with heavy duty cleaners.

APPAREL

Test the pack by adding weight and making sure straps don't slide or get stuck. A properly fitting pack will sit on the hips. Make sure to test the zippers.

BACKPACKS

Check the frame for damage or weak points. Grip tape can be easily replaced. Re-stringing a tennis racquet can be done by a professional.

TENNIS GEAR

Check the insoles (the insides that your feet rest on). They can be easily replaced and customized to your preference.
